Country’s Biggest Classic Car Show Revs up This Weekend
If you love old and classic cars – or even eye-wateringly expensive new ones – an estimated eight hundred of them will gather at the country’s biggest annual car event this Sunday February 12.
Almost 100 years of cars – ranging from some of the world’s best restorations to every day hobbies - will be on show at the 39th NZ Classic Car magazine Classic Car show at Ellerslie Race Course.
The show is organised by some 75 car clubs showing rare, historic and once popular budget models to exotic prestige and unbelievably expensive restorations. They’ll compete for the country’s top awards for restorations, displays and performance. Winners sometimes compete successfully at prestigious events overseas.
The show will also feature one of the biggest line ups of new prestige and performance cars seen in this country. They'll include for the first time new Rolls Royces as well as exotics from car makers such as Aston Marton, Lamborghini, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, BMW, VW, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, Mini, Citroen and so on.
Host Auckland Mustang Owners Club which swept the Awards last year is expected to show around 60 cars.
Interestingly, an increasing number of women now own classics and participate in club activities – something which generally used to be considered the male domain.
The Classic Cover Insurance Award for the “Best Club Display” will be chosen by leading motoring writers Jacqui Madelin and Peter Gill and there’s also the Meguiar’s Best Presented car – often an every day hobby car.
On Saturday several hundred classics will converge on Vellenoweth Green, St Heliers after a fun run from various parts of Auckland.
Show times are – 10-4pm; Admission $15.00; under 12 free.
