Teretonga to Host Evolution Motorsport Classic Speedfest

Another exciting array of machinery has been assembled for this years Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest at Teretonga Park in Invercargill this weekend.

Tickets for the annual event have gone on sale and discounted weekend passes to the popular event are available from Auto Centre in Tweed Street, Invercargill at a cost of just $25.

The Classic Saloons feature big banger cars such as Canadian Jack Ondracks TVR Tuscan, Valiant Chargers, Ford Mustangs and a Holden Torana A9X through to thoroughbred machinery such as Alfas, Porsches and BMWs along with giant killers such as Minis.

The Sports Cars boast some race bred machinery up against some homebuilt specials while the Single Seater field is massive, the main interest being the large number of Formula Junior cars amongst the entries. Formula Junior was a launching pad for the careers of several Formula 1 aces of the 1960's, names such as Jim Clark, John Surtees and Jochen Rindt emerging from the category. Two Australians have also brought their Formula Vee machines across the Tasman to add to the impressive field.

The Formula Libre class sees a wonderful line up of machinery but most interest will undoubtedly be focused on the awe inspiring Formula 1 McLaren M23 of Phil Mauger and the Begg FM5 of fellow Christchurch driver Lindsay O'Donnell.

The Historic Touring Car Class sees many marques of a golden era of saloon racing, including a BMW SuperTourer, Walkinshaw Commodore and a Jaguar XJS, back on the track while the Vintage Car races feature names to excite such as an Alfa Romeo 750 Competizione, the Edelbrock Special and the Lycoming.

Meanwhile the Pre 65 Saloon category return for a round of their South Island Championship with Wayne Tuffley of Invercargill one of the leading competitors in his Ford Mustang. His battle with Gareth Halls Chevrolet Nova SS will be a beauty.

The Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Saloons class has a superb entry for this meeting with former National OSCA Champion Colin Dawson of Invercargill leading the way in his V8 powered Mazda RX7.

The Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest guarantees two full days of action with the on track activities commencing at 9.30am on Saturday and 9.00am on Sunday. Competitors travel from every corner of New Zealand for the meeting and this year they will again be joined by another influx of international drivers from Australia and Canada. One of the most pleasant features of the SpeedFest each year is the opportunity to admire the assorted vehicles close up in the pits with drivers only too happy to talk to spectators between races.

Tickets purchased at the gate over the weekend cost $30 for a weekend pass while Saturday only tickets cost $15 and Sunday only tickets $20. Admission for children under 14 who are accompanied by an adult is free.
