Students compete for Designer of the Year title
29 FEBRUARY 2012
Students compete for Designer of the Year title
Nine gardens
by landscape design students from throughout New Zealand
will compete for the title of Student Designer of the Year
at this year’s Ellerslie International Flower
Show.
Sponsored by Solid Energy, this year’s competition has drawn entries from Wellington, the Wairarapa and Christchurch.
Ellerslie Exhibition Manager Kate Hillier says with the 22 February earthquake cancelling last year’s Show, there are two student categories this year to enable those students competing last year to complete their gardens.
“Four gardens will be designed based on the 2011 brief to create a small, low-maintenance courtyard garden for a couple with no children. “These gardens will give an illusion of a pocket of tranquillity, a place to entertain.
“The other five gardens will be designed to the 2012 client brief of designing a garden for a middle-aged couple inspired by the sustainable garden revolution to grow their own vegetables.”
Ms Hillier says these gardens will “burst with innovation and creativity”.
“These are the country’s next generation of landscape, design and horticultural experts who are not frightened to push the boundaries and challenge visitors to the Show to think differently about their urban spaces.”
The competition provides the students with a great opportunity to showcase their design skills to the thousands of visitors at the Show.
