Toy Library Awareness Week (March 1-8, 2012)
Press Release: March 1, 2012
Toy Library Awareness Week (March 1-8, 2012) about Kiwi families making more time to play
Toy Library Federation of
NZ is encouraging families to spend more time playing with
their children during Toy Library Awareness Week 2012.
During the week – which runs March 1-8 – the Federation is urging caregivers to check out their local toy library and see what it has on offer.
“During Toy Library Awareness Week we’re asking people to pause in their busy lives and take some time out to have fun and play with their children,” says TLFNZ manager Chris Jelley.
“The memories of a child’s play really do last a lifetime. Toy Libraries provide an easy and cost effective way to make play a regular part of a family’s routine.”
With more than 220 toy libraries throughout New Zealand based both in rural communities and the cities, toy libraries are one of the single biggest not-for-profit organisations that cater for all families and children.
The changing roles of families in modern society mean children do not always have the opportunity for impromptu play in an outdoor environment that previous generations haveenjoyed. This is limited with city living, smaller sections and the perception that children are not safe if left alone.
Toy libraries are a way for families to utilise equipment and toys that can be the tools to help create a play space where children can develop the skills they need to copewith life as they grow. A simple colour shape sorter is not just a puzzle, it is an opportunity for parents to interact with their children, discussing colour, shape, action. As the child plays with the toy they are promoting hand-eye coordination, problem solving and fine motor skills – essential skills for learning to read and write.
