News Release 20 March 2012

HAWKE’S BAY ARTIST BEN TIMMINS’ ARTWORK SELECTED TO PROMOTE THIS YEAR’S NEW ZEALAND ART SHOW

Three of Ben Timmins’ artworks have been chosen to promote this year’s New Zealand Art Show. The three paintings which feature birds; Sentinel, Pavo and Pondera provide the imagery for the billboards, posters, advertising, banners and other collateral for the 2012 New Zealand Art Show.

Hawke’s Bay-based Ben Timmins first exhibited at the New Zealand Art Show in 2007 and last year won the Show’s Signature Piece Art Award.

The New Zealand Art Show’s executive director Carla Russell says, “The artists and their artworks are central to the New Zealand Art Show. Using their imagery in our branding for the annual Show acknowledges this and demonstrates to our public that the art we exhibit is of outstanding quality.

“This is now the second year that we have chosen one of our artists’ works for our branding for the Show. Last year we selected two of New Plymouth artist Jordan Barnes’ artworks as our ‘hero’ images.”

Ben Timmins paints photo realistic imagery on natural wood grain panels, framed with a unique copper band. Last year, in addition to winning the $5,000 Signature Piece Art Award at the New Zealand Art Show, he won first prize for painting at Art Show North. This painting was bought by the James Wallace Trust, which has some 5,000 original New Zealand artworks and is regarded as one of this country’s most prestigious art collections.

Ben Timmins said, “This is a great follow up to winning the Signature Art Award; having my artwork even more in the public eye is the opportunity every emerging artist hopes for. I’m grateful for the ongoing support of the New Zealand Art Show and for the recognition this gives me as an artist.”

This year’s New Zealand Art Show runs from Friday, 3 August to Sunday, 5 August in Wellington’s TSB Bank Arena on Queens Wharf.
