Christchurch City Chorus Comes Out on Top in Hometown

Christchurch City Chorus (Sweet Adelines) Comes Out on Top in Home Town

The Sweet Adelines International New Zealand convention was held in Christchurch at the CBS Arena this weekend, and Christchurch City Chorus once again placed first among the competing choruses. 'We formed in 1987, and every time we have entered the NZ barbershop singing competition, we've won' says Musical Director Virginia Humphrey-Taylor. 'It was especially satisfying to come out on top this year, in Christchurch, and we're grateful that other women's barbershop choruses and quartets supported our city by agreeing to hold the convention here at the CBS Arena.'

The panel of judges, all a cappella specialists from the USA, were impressed by Christchurch City Chorus's energy and finesse. 'Energy was rolling and rolling in this chorus with superior vocal skills in evidence throughout', according to judge Lea Beverley. ' What a wonderful sound and beautiful presentation of the musical product.'

Second place-getter was Greater Auckland Chorus.

The win means Christchurch City Chorus is eligible to represent NZ at the Sweet Adelines International convention in Honolulu in October next year, where they will be looking to move up from their current 11th place world ranking.
