The Unofficial Kiwi Movie Month Attracts Strong Support
The Unofficial Kiwi Movie Month (and a bit) is up and running for the month of May showcasing some of the best films New Zealand has produced.
Every year Kiwi film-makers busy themselves at creating unique screen gems and yet when they’re finished, the country sits back and waits to see what everyone else thinks.
Academy Award winning editor and co-founder of Weta, Jamie Selkirk, says “I think there needs to be some debate in this country about what people think of a Kiwi Movie Month. Would we be behind it as a country? Do people already think that New Zealand’s 'made it’ and doesn't need a month? Do they think we haven't got enough to show? I think it's an idea whose time has come.”
Instead of twiddling his thumbs, Andy Miller, Programming Executive at EVENT Cinemas and full-time movie buff, has started an Unofficial Kiwi Movie Month with the resources he has available to him and with a whole lot of work behind the scenes to get supporters from within the New Zealand film industry on board with the project. Andy says, “Kiwis have an amazing ability to produce compelling films, but it can be all too easy to overlook them, hence the Movie Month. It’s great that EVENT Cinema’s is backing this idea so strongly. ”
At the moment New Zealand has no official month, or even a bit, when we as a nation can stop and smell the cinematic roses. So we’re raising the idea unofficially. What do you think? Dip your toe in and see if you like it.
There are three brilliant new films on offer, amazing classics and encore screenings of recent favourites. This isn’t your typical polished festival, this is a hands-on celebration that every Kiwi can make their own – we hope it’s the first step to something truly special.
