Fundraising for far trade in Wellington: A Fine Affair
A Fine Affair
A Fine Affair promises to showcase Wellington’s fair trade produce in this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.
Wellington Pop-Up chef Tania Sawicki Mead will cook a formal dinner at the Newtown Community Centre.
The fundraising event celebrates the diverse range of Fairtrade produce available in Wellington and aims to raise awareness of the importance of supporting fair trade.
The evening will be a fun filled affair with a string trio of local musicians to accompany what is guaranteed to be sumptuous meal. This group of young Wellington composers and musicians are getting together especially for this event.
Businesses in the region have been incredibly supportive with Yealands Estate, a carboNZero accredited vineyard donating wine, Peoples Coffee donating Fairtrade coffee and Kowtow donating items of their Fairtrade cotton clothing range.
A fascinating insight into the Fairtrade world will be imparted by Matt Morrison from All Good Organics. He will share his experiences of importing Fairtrade bananas from Ecuador. Further entertainment will be provided in the form of an auction featuring such items as a night at the Museum Hotel. All funds raised will be donated to Oxfam.
The Newtown community has rallied around the event, particularly the flourishing Wellington South time bank. Coordinator for the time bank, Hannah Mackintosh, is hosting A Fine Affair. She has used the time bank to promote the event and build a team of volunteers for the dinner. “With 100 members in the time bank, it is a wonderfully rich resource for supporting local events. The chef, some of the musicians, and all those helping with the preparation of the event are time bank members,” says Hannah Mackintosh.
This is the fourth year that Coordinator of A Fine Affair, Renee Rushton, has organised an event for Fairtrade Fortnight. “This year, some friends and I decided to up the anti and hold a slightly more ambitious event,” says Renee Rushton, “In putting on A Fine Affair, we aim to raise the profile of Fairtrade Fortnight in a creative, fun and delicious way as well as raising a little money for Oxfam in the process.”
A Fine Affair will be held at 7.00pm, Saturday 19th May. Tickets are $40.00 per person and can be purchased from Renee Rushton. There are only 30 spots available, so get in quick! Donations for the auction can be made by contacting Renee Rushton. You can contact her on renee.rushton@gmail.com.
