Craft is the New Black! Handmade 2012 in Wellington
Craft is the New Black!
24 May 2012
Over 1,000 craft-hungry people will descend on central Wellington this Queen’s Birthday weekend in living proof that craft is the new black.
HANDMADE 2012 brings together best-in-class experts to pass on their skills and experience in 70 hands-on workshops, look and learn Masterclasses and topical lectures. The weekend becomes a focus for cultivators of craft and is a celebration all things HANDMADE.
The event is the brainchild of Avenues Event Management’s Managing Director, Melanie Walker who says the concept has grown from a surge in interest from people wanting to learn the skills and crafts of previous generations but in today's context, using modern technology and style.
“HANDMADE is a contemporary, creative and inspiring event designed to allow anyone interested in either refreshing their knowledge of handmade crafts, or learning something completely new, to come along and try for themselves,” says Melanie.
“I am very much of the view that craft is the new ‘black’ in that it is now cool to be able to produce gifts or useful items that you have made yourself – spent time on yourself – or created yourself from scratch.
“That’s why we have such a wide range of classes and experiences on offer. There’s everything from up-cycling of pre-loved business shirts and craft beer tastings to Oriental bookbinding, tribal bunting and heirloom smocking.”
HANDMADE 2012 is being held in downtown Wellington centred on venues in and around Te Papa and the Town Hall. Tickets are on sale now through www.handmade2012.co.nz.
