NZ BODY ART AWARDS 2012

THE FUTURE

The 24 years old Sofia Bue Pedersen is one of the talented artists of the annual NZ Body Art Awards. Her first entrance in the 2011 Awards was one of the biggest successes in her body painting career: She won the “Hand Painted Novice” category and also went home with the Cutabove Academy Award for Best Overall Emerging Artist.

Sofia’s interest in art and painting started in her early childhood where she went to art school with her mother. She was born and raised in Denmark and worked as a children’s face painter in Danish Legoland in her summer holidays where she learned basic techniques of face painting. This work inspired her to try body painting, and that interest increased when she moved to New Zealand three years ago. Since January 2012, Sofia has been a student at Cutabove Academy. She also works for Body FX, doing face painting, body art and special effects.

“Working in the New Zealand Body Art community has taught me so much. It has given me great friendships and we learn a lot from each other. And I believe working together makes you a much better artist”.

“New Zealand’s Body Art community is like a big body painting family, and it’s a great environment to grow and practice” Sofia says. “I love getting together for body paint jams, fundraising and charity events”.

In 2012, the young artist will enter the NZ Body Art Awards for the second time. “Last year I didn’t know what to expect and I just wanted to try it out. Then I went home with 2 awards!” This year Sofia wants to enter with a piece in ‘Special Effects’. “I am really excited to be able to show my work in front of Sir Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop.” she says. In her future, Sofia wants to work more towards Special Effects for films. Her dream is to work for Weta Workshop.

Sir Richard Taylor and his company are responsible for the costumes and special effects of the Lord of the Ring, The Hobbit, King Kong and Avatar films. These films as well as books and cartoons are Sofia’s source of inspiration. Her work at Cutabove Academy helps her to narrow down her ideas and improve them towards a final concept.

Sofia likes competitions and especially the NZ Body Art Awards. “I love the atmosphere and working with a group of people who all burn for the same thing.” Sofia says. “And of course it is nice to be able to show your work in front of a live audience.”
