Kiwi riders take first place in Niue biking competitions

Auckland, New Zealand. June 15, 2012 – A Taupo biking enthusiast has won the iconic Rally of the Rock mountain biking competition which took place in Niue this month.

John Carman won both the Overall and Junior Class titles netting him $800 for his efforts. However it is the memories of the event, and his time in Niue that John values the most.

“They put on an awesome time for us. It was a very well run event that wasn’t too competitive but very very social,” says John.

“It was really fun racing with and getting to know the locals. The race wasn’t technical at all but it was a very fast track that’s good for all levels of riders. It is a nice way to see some of the island too.”

Event organisers for the race have rendered it a great success with thirty-five competitors including a large component of international riders. Many of the international competitors brought friends and family with them to Niue so there was also a large support base on the day.

To cater for the strong contingent of international competitors and their travel companions, there are plenty of additional activities arranged throughout the week including further bike rides, barbeques as well as group fishing and diving opportunities.

Many of the Rally of the Rock racers also competed in the inaugural Round the Rock biking challenge – a challenging 60km road sprint around the island which took place two days later.

Round the Rock was won by New Zealand rider Ryan Locke who clocked in at just under two hours.
