Kiwi School Kids’ Cooking Challenge Winners Announced

Press Release 20 June 2012

Kiwi School Kids’ Cooking Challenge Winners Announced

Five talented teens have been announced the winners of this year’s Just Cook Create a Family Meal Challenge.

The New Zealand Nutrition Foundation (NZNF) received hundreds of entries from around New Zealand but it was Antony Kapeli-Su’a (16) from Papakura High School (Auckland) who took out the top prize for his Asian Chicken with Stir Fry Noodles in the Tegel Challenge. Second place went to Jonathan Sylvester (13) from Onslow College (Wellington) for his Italian Beef Casserole in the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Challenge.

Both winners received an iPod Touch, a selection of cookbooks from Penguin and a range of Kenwood prizes for their school. Antony was awarded a Kenwood Titanium Major Kitchen Machine (RRP $1,800) while Jonathan was the recipient of a Kenwood Multi Pro Excel Food Processor (RRP $1,000).

The aim of this challenge is to build young Kiwis’ confidence in the kitchen and encourage them to become part of putting a meal on the table.

Students were invited to submit an original recipe, for a family of five, based on the ingredients from the Just Cook Food List – a selection of pantry and fridge/freezer essentials that all New Zealand households should have on hand as compiled by the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation.

Sarah Hanrahan, NZNF Dietitian, says: “The calibre of this year’s dishes was very high – with great use of affordable ingredients and some beautifully presented meals. Jonathon’s Italian Beef Casserole particularly appealed because it not only made good use a cheaper cut of meat but he gave his meal a nutrition boost and made it go further by adding a can of beans. Antony’s Asian Chicken is packed with flavour and is a good example of an interesting, delicious meal based on frozen chicken.”
