NZSM and the End of the World 2012

NZSM and the End of the World 2012

The ‘End of the World’ scenario popularized in the disaster film 2012 is the beginning point and underlying inspiration behind a concert performance to be presented by Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music this Friday, 29 June, in the Ilott Theatre, Wellington. Town Hall.

Timewave Zero is a unique performance coordinated by Dr Dave Lisik bringing together electronic musical techniques, electroacoustic elements, live improvisation involving members of NZSM's Classical Performance, Jazz and Composition programmes together with international collaborators. Dr Lisik is a jazz musician, composer and lecturer at NZSM.

“Many people are aware of the myths surrounding the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21, 2012,” Dr Lisik explains. “Timewave Zero is a theory developed by the late Terence McKenna heavily entrenched in this ‘end of world’ mythology. I have used these ideas sonically and acoustically as a starting point for the composition. The live performance of this piece will feature the outstanding talents of NZSM performance staff Inbal Megiddo (cello), Martin Riseley (violin), Colin Hemmingsen (bass clarinet) and Tim Hopkins (tenor saxophone). I will also be involved with trumpet and electronics.

“We live performers will be playing and improvising over top of a manipulated soundscape provided by other collaborators : NZSM percussion lecturer, Lance Philip, New York City electroacoustic composer Jorge Sosa, and British contemporary vocalist Anna Edgington, forming a truly international project.”

The concert is part of Friday at 5:15 series of free concerts in the Ilott Theatre, showcasing the extraordinary performing and creative talent found among the staff and students of the New Zealand School of Music. The series is generously supported by the Wellington City Council.

Dr Lisik hastens to reassure Wellington audiences: “I’m quite sure that we’ll all be here to enjoy 2013, but the Timewave Zero theory makes for interesting inspiration and storytelling.”

Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music is the preeminent provider of tertiary music education in New Zealand and is a joint venture of Massey University of New Zealand and Victoria University of Wellington.
