Clare Coburn: When her
six-year old daughter was given a copy of Grimm's fairy
tales, Clare's mother hid it high on her wardrobe shelf
thinking the stories were 'unsuitable for children'. Clare
would sneak in to read a story or two when her mother was
out. She further awoke to the enchantment of stories as an
adult. With skills as an educator, writer and mediator,
Clare has studied and worked with the International School
of Storytelling in East Sussex, UK, in South Africa and in
Australia to hone her skills and passion in storytelling.
She has a PhD on listening in conflict and teaches
storytelling, conflict resolution and communication skills
at universities, in workshops and for personal
development.
Host for the evening will be Ralph
Johnson, recently returned from the UK, where with other
Baggage Co-op members, Tony Hopkins and Moira Wairama, he
recently took their show Te Haerenga, a journey of
identity.
The theme for August cafe will be:
Courage to wonder
Stories take us on
journeys to enter dark woods, to face fears, traverse
conflict and darkness and find the courage to wander, and to
wonder so we can reach new ways of being. Through
traditional tales, personal reflections and poetry,
Melbourne storyteller, Clare Coburn will leave you open to
wonder.
Open to all storylovers. Stories will be
aimed at an adult audience. As well as the guest
performance there is usually an opportunity for short
stories from other tellers to be shared
