Night Skiing on hold

Media release from Coronet Peak
19 July 2012

Night Skiing on hold

Current snow conditions and unfavourable temperatures are the catalyst for Queenstown’s Coronet Peak ski area putting its night time ski experience on hold from this weekend, Friday July 20.

Conditions will be assessed on a weekly basis and night skiing operations will resume as soon as weather and snow conditions allow.

“Our priority is to ensure the trails on the ski area are in the best possible condition for skiers and boarders during the day,” said Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie. “At the moment with temperatures and conditions as they are, the best time for us to groom the ski area is during the night skiing timeframe.

“We know we will get much better groomed terrain if we groom between 4pm and 10pm. After 10 the ground is freezing and we’re unable to achieve the best possible result.

“We know how popular Night Skiing is among locals and visitors. We’ve not made this decision lightly and are committed to getting Night Skiing up and running again just as soon as conditions allow.”

Mr McCrostie said Coronet Peak had enjoyed a spectacular school holiday period and terrific season to date with a good snow base.

“Rest assured that every moment we can, as temperatures allow, we’ll have all snow guns blazing.”

Night Skiing is usually available on Friday and Saturday nights at the ski area with extended opening hours until 9pm.
