Lamb Trips The Light

Lamb Trips The Light

Mix all kinds of rock, small children on percussion, women’s acapella backing vocals and some of the best Wellington musicians and you’ve got the latest offering from popular Wellington singer/songwriter Julie Lamb.

‘Trippin' the light’ is Lamb’s second album and despite the novelty moments, heralds her return to what she describes as her true singing roots – rock.

Her new album, to be launched at Bodega on 29 July, features six original songs by Lamb with an additional three co-written by local Wellington artists, Mike Jamieson and Alan Stuart. As well, Lamb covers 2 originals, one by Mike Nyland, (of Von Thundersvolt) the other by Julian Ward (The awesome photographer.)

“Some of the lyrics are quite dark. Which is odd because I’m at a really good point in my life right now, but subconscious can be a crazy thing,” says Julie.

“The songs are good. I know this because the band I’ve recorded with want to keep playing together. And they keep abusing me about the tunes getting stuck in their heads.”

Lamb started seriously singing outside of choirs at 43, and has come a long way in eight years, having headlined Janis Joplin tribute band, Channelling Janis (described as a “raw, gut-wrenching performance”), founded 10dd, an acapella 10cc tribute group and sung everything from funky blues, to acoustic folk, rock to gospel.

Julie, who in addition to a full time preoccupation with music runs an accountancy business, says that just as with her business, networks and a helping hand have made all the difference.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with a great teacher (Dave Feehan) and just like my last album I’ve had the fortune to work with fantastic musicians” says Julie.

“But you know, all the stuff around music – getting, sourcing, organising gigs – it’s a lot of work for a very short live audience buzz. So this album is an opportunity to get some more profile and to share what I love doing with a much wider audience.”

‘Trippin the Light’ will be available for $20 from the free launch party running 2 – 4 pm at Bodega on Sunday 29 July. All welcome.

Or you can buy online at www.julielamb.co.nz or at www.cdbaby.com

Julie Lamb’s first album, Most and Least, is also available for sale.
