Charity Begins At Home - Educating Rita

July 23, 2012 Press Release Charity Begins At Home

Dust off your bookshelves and your old books for a worthy cause.

Aucklanders are being asked to donate their books to the region’s newest theatre company, Newmarket Stage Company (NSC), for their debut production of Willy Russell's Educating Rita. All the books will be donated to charity following the two-week season.

"We need all the books we can lay our hands on. All manner of books will do, including second hand, fiction, non fiction, old encyclopedia, medical books, text books, novels, classics," says the show's artistic director Adey Ramsel.

"NSC any plans to donate all the books to Variety - The Children’s Charity that holds the annual Variety Monster Book Fair, after the season."

NSC is an initiative bringing Newmarket’s businesses and the arts together through live theatre. The company, primarily based at Newmarket’s The Factory Theatre on Eden St, will complement the area's quality nightlife, restaurants and bars. Ramsel adds that Newmarket is the ideal place for a new theatre company.

"The infrastructure is already here – plenty of great cafés and bars, a train station, bus routes, two cinema complexes as well as the Opera Factory which has been based in Newmarket for the past 15 years. Having a professional theatre company can only add to the lively Newmarket district."

Educating Rita stars acclaimed Kiwi actor George Henare (Frank), who aims to transform hairdresser Rita (Jodie Hillock) into an educated woman.
