Philips Lighting: Art in the Dark 2012 winners

Philips Lighting enables Art in the Dark winners to switch on their creativity

Auckland, September 28, 2012 - The top three winners of Philips Lighting’s Art in the Dark 2012 competition have been announced. Art in the Dark is Auckland’s premiere free, community light art event which will be held in Ponsonby’s Western Park on the evenings of Friday 9 and Saturday 10 November.

The competition, sponsored by Philips Lighting with support from AUT, gives all tertiary students in New Zealand the opportunity to design a light installation using Philips Lighting’s LED products, including energy-efficient LED light bulbs and luminaires. The three winners receive Philips lighting products up to the value of $2500 each to create an installation based on their winning designs for display at Art in the Dark.

“Philips Lighting is pleased to support Art in the Dark as a way of encouraging creativity in lighting design. LED lighting opens up so many new possibilities for creative thinking and design, so this is an opportunity for the designers of the future to experiment and see what light can do,” says David Procter of Philips Lighting.

Entries are judged on imagination and/or artistic concept, environmental friendliness, innovative use of Philips energy-efficient light bulbs and production feasibility. The top three equally placed winners of Art in the Dark 2012 are:

1. Out of the Dark (Angus Muir and Alexandra Heaney) in collaboration with James Pendergrast
2. Nicholas O’Rourke and Sophy Leang
3. Jae Hyeon Seong

All of the winners are AUT students or alumni. Angus Muir and Alexandra Heaney have recently completed their Masters of Architechture, while James Pendergrast, Nicholas O’Rourke, Sophy Leang and Jae Hyeon Seong are currently completing a Spatial Design Degree.

During the display of the winners’ designs at Art in the Dark 2012 the public will be able to vote on their favourite installation, with the overall winner receiving a Philips prize pack valued at $1000.

“Art in the Dark has become a platform for bright Kiwi minds to show-off their talents, and a chance for the community to get involved in the art world from the comfort of their city’s own backyard. The end results are always spectacular,” says Celia Harrison, Creative Director, Art in the Dark.

Details about the winners’ installations are in the attached appendix. For more information about Art in the Dark, visit www.artinthedark.co.nz

Out of the Dark (Angus Muir and Alexandra Heaney) in association with James PendergrastUntitledA large 10 metre long canopy, made up of a grid of 500 pixels and bulbs, will be suspended from a large tree and hung evenly over the footpath and part of the hill in Western Park. It will be constructed from a mesh reinforcing grid and the bulbs will be of different sizes, and hung at varying lengths. Beanbags will be placed underneath the installation for an immersive experience. Elements of interaction are being developed which may include technologies with sonars and infrared cameras. The installation will feature changing sequences and effects which are designed to be subtle, soft and delicate. The entire installation will run on the power of two 100W light bulbs. It is a continuation of a project recently completed in Sydney.
Nicholas O’Rourke and Sophy LeangUntitledThe concept reflects the history of Western Park by creating the experience of traversing a mythological river which used to run through it. The design is divided into three stages of the river flow. The first element is at the top of Western Park on the Ponsonby Road end. In the same way that water is concentrated down from a spreading of different sources, the lights are drawn in onto one particular point. The river channels down a narrow path throughout the land, fighting for the fastest way to the ocean. The main attraction of the design is a misty waterfall at the end of the journey. A mix of dimmable LED lights and non-dimmable bulbs will be used, with the dimmable bulbs pulsating to give the illusion of water flow. A water irrigation system will be used to create this effect alongside several weak lights to illuminate the water.
Jae Hyeon SeongSunset-riseSunset-rise captures the idea of being in the middle – of shifting from past to future – as a moment to reflect on our self-identity and future possibilities. Inspired by Jae’s aeroplane journey from his home country of Korea to New Zealand, he uses light to recreate his experience on the aeroplane, reflecting his feelings of anxiety and sense of time standing still. His installation produces a spectrum of coloured shadow made by the primary colours of the light, and also incorporates a moment of “white noise” with the sound of heavy rain. The two elements reflect the idea of being in the middle as the moment to see the true form of ourselves and the infinite possibilities for ourselves.
