On the Upside Down of the World
The Michael King Writers’ Centre has organised an exciting theatrical event as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
It is a performance of the one-woman play On the Upside Down of the World, starring Laurel Devenie.
The play is based on the diaries of Lady Ann Martin, who was the wife of the first Chief Justice in New Zealand. She lived in Judges Bay, Parnell, and she recalls her interactions with local Maori as well as her experiences in the new colony, where her preconceptions are stripped away.
The play premiered in Auckland in 2011 and has toured to Wellington. Laurel Devenie’s performance has been described by reviewers as astonishing and extraordinary. The play has been described as superbly moving.
This Auckland Theatre Company production was directed by Colin McColl. After the North Shore performance, it will be running as part of the Nelson Arts Festival.
The playwright, Arthur Meek, held the 2011 residency at the Michael King Writers’ Centre and will attend the performance.
The play will be on for one night only at The Victoria Theatre in Devonport on Monday October 8, at 7.30 pm.
Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students.
Tickets can be purchased through the Michael King Writers’ Centre:
