SKYCITY Breakers Inspiring StandTall Students This Friday

The final countdown is on for year 8 StandTall students, who will experience a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the work behind the SKYCITY Breakers and other idolized characters in the sports industry.

Auckland Blues player management Ben Meyer, Rob Salthouse from Team New Zealand, Steve Buckley from High Performance Sport NZ, New Zealand Tennis and the SKYCITY Breakers will educate 32 StandTall students on what is involved with a career in sports and health.

Students attending are a part of StandTall, a not-for-profit organisation for hard-working children from low-decile schools in South Auckland. StandTall exposes intermediate students to opportunities, enabling them to reach their full potential.

StandTall’s success has helped 13-year-old Mangere Central School student Rautea Mitchell win gold at the 15th World Va'a outrigging competition in Canada. Mitchell is excited to attend the workshop and share her story with Abercrombie and the other sporting professionals joining the day.

The workshop kicks off with an interactive training and advice session with the SKYCITY Breakers at the North Shore Events Centre. The NBL champions will share their successes, struggles and motivations from their experiences in the industry.

Students will travel to the SKYCITY Breakers headquarters, where they will learn from other professionals working alongside the team including personal trainers, physiotherapists and coaches.

SKYCITY Breakers player Tom Abercrombie believes the StandTall students will have a very insightful day understanding what goes on behind the scenes of the organisation.

“From a players standpoint, we really appreciate what goes on in the front office. [This] careers day may ‘light that flame’ in wanting to work for a professional sporting organisation” says Abercrombie.

The careers day will continue at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health, where High Performance Sport NZ and NZ Tennis will share their expert tips with the students before MISH round off the enlightening day with a tour of the amazing facilities.

StandTall ambassador and TV personality Jo Holley is also attending the workshop to support the students.

Domino’s Pizza is the proud sponsor of the student’s dinner before students return to the North Shore Events Centre to enjoy seats at the SKYCITY Breakers VS Townsville game. Murphy Buses will ensure students travel safely.
