Writing Craft Workshop with writer/director Michael Bennett


Script to Screen and Ngā Aho Whakaari present a film workshop with writer/director Michael Bennett.

Come and join us for this one day workshop to learn about crafting a screenplay. The course will consider the underlying principles of writing for the big and small screens. The discussions will use example excerpts from feature films, short films and television as references. The day is suitable for writers and filmmakers from beginners through to the more experienced looking for a work-out and tune-up. Time will also be scheduled for participants to pitch and get feedback on a project they are currently working on.

Sun 11th November, Kokohuia Marae, Omapere, Hokianga.
The workshop is free but please bring a plate to share for lunch.

Schedule:

10:30am – Participants arrive

11am – Morning Session: Writing for the Big and Small Screens – Basic Principles.

12.30pm – Shared Lunch – please bring a plate

1:30pm - Afternoon Session: The Holy Trinity of Screenwriting – Structure, Structure and Structure. Learn about developing a project and building a career in screenwriting. Session finishes with participants’ pitch and feedback session.

5:30pm – Workshop finish

Michael Bennett is a writer/director of Te Arawa descent (Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Whakaue). Michael’s first produced screenplay, the short comedy film Michelle’s Third Novel, was selected as the short film to accompany the US gala premiere of Pulp Fiction at the opening night of the 1994 New York Film Festival. Michael wrote and directed the internationally award-winning short films Cow and Kerosene Creek. Michael has won or been selected as finalist in the New Zealand Film and Television Awards in the categories of Best Screenplay (Feature Film), Best Screenplay (Short Film), Best Screenplay (Television Drama), Best Screenplay (Television Comedy), Best Director (Television Drama) and Best Director (Television Factual). Michael co-wrote and directed the 2010 feature film Matariki, which debuted at Toronto Film Festival and won Best Screenplay at the 2011 SWANZ Awards, and Best Feature at the 2011 Wairoa Film Festival.

Continue on State Highway 1 to Opopnoni. Continue on past Opononi Hotel. Continue on and turn left on to Kokohuia Road. Follow road up and via left up to marae driveway. Park car where all the others are parked. If you are new wait here to be welcomed.

From Dargaville
Continue on State Highway 1, down past the big hotel on the left, turn right into Kokohuia Rd. Follow road up via left up to marae driveway. Park car where all the others are parked. If you are new wait here to be welcomed.
