Kennett in King of the Mountain jersey

29 October 2012

Dylan Kennett will wear the King of the Mountain jersey in today's stage one of the Powernet Tour of Southland after his SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team was third in yesterday's prologue in Invercargill.

Powernet’s Heath Blackgrove will wear the yellow jersey as he was the first rider across the line for his PowerNet team that won the prologue, a 4.2 kilometre team time trial around Queens Park, in a time of 5:04.5 nearly 25 seconds slower than last year's winning time due to the windy conditions.

Myron Simpson (PowerNet) was the fastest under 23 rider and Calder Stewart's Michael Vink will wear the sprint ace jersey.

Calder Stewart produced the second fastest time of the day with a 5:06.1, just point one of a second ahead of SUBWAY® Pro Cycling.

SUBWAY® Pro Cycling General Manager Hayden Godfrey said the team’s performance was solid and he thought it was always going to be tight amongst the first few teams.

“We are now in an ideal position for when the real racing starts,” he said. “Tomorrows weather forecast is for strong winds which will affect the race with cross winds expected late in the stage. It wouldn’t be Southland without challenging weather.”

Tomorrow's first stage takes the riders 160 kilometres from Invercargill, through Western Southland, finishing in the Northern Southland township of Lumsden. The stage gets underway at 10am and will finish about 2pm.
