MEDIA RELEASE 30 October 2012

Lockwood Wins Inaugural V8 Challenge Cup With Round Win

Matt Lockwood has been crowned the inaugural V8 Challenge Cup champion after the last round held at Pukekohe over the weekend.

To win the title, all Lockwood had to do was finish and stay out of trouble. This didn’t slow him down though as he qualified on Pole and went on to win the opening race with the fastest lap.

The Sunday morning reverse grid race saw Lockwood start from p5 and by the end of the first lap he was into second place, and eventually winning the race with another fastest lap.

Lockwood started Race 3 from pole with Tony Anderson along side him, Tony racing in the class 2 category with a 6.2 LS3 engine compared to Lockwood’s 5L V8.

They both got a great start but with the extra horse power Tony got in front of Lockwood before turn 1 and from there held onto the lead to take his first race win of the season.

Lockwood says he was wrapped with how the weekend went, and despite winning the championship at the end of Saturdays racing, still wanted to push hard for more wins.

“Winning the final round is an awesome way to end the season, particularly with two wins and a second, I couldn’t have asked for much more,” says Lockwood.

“I really have to thank my major sponsors, PlaceMakers, Colorsteel, Health and Sports and other sponsors that chipped in to help me get through the season.”

“And last but not least, I have to thank my parents, family and friends for all their support. Also a big thank you to my team for doing an amazing job all year, Jake, Kirk and Dan at Stoneman Race Tech Ltd, Crunch, Darryn, Greg and also Gary and Dennis at PWR for all their help.”

Lockwood hopes to move up into the V8 SuperTourer category next season. He believes he has shown he has the ability to run in the class but now needs to focus on getting the funding together to secure a drive.

Lockwood won the V8 Challenge Cup championship with the following statistics out of 5 rounds and 15 races.

Round wins - 4

Poles - 2

Race wins – 8

Podiums – 13

Fastest Laps – 11
