Renee Fleming Takes on Her Greatest Role Yet in Verdi’s Otello

Renée Fleming sings the role of the innocent Desdemona in Verdi’s towering tragedy Otello - the second offering from the Met Opera in HD’s 2012-2013 season.

The thrilling drama, considered by many to be Verdi’s masterpiece, will play at select cinemas around New Zealand for a limited season from 22 November to 3 December.

Fleming is joined by South African tenor Johan Botha who sings the demanding title role - one of the most difficult and rewarding in all of opera. German bass-baritone Falk Struckmann sings the role of Otello’s villainous ensign, Iago, while American operatic tenor Michael Fabiano makes his Met Opera in HD debut as the captain Cassio.
Otello, which made its world premiere in Milan in 1827, is based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy about the jealous Moor of Venice. It is conducted by Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov.
Since the Met Opera Live in HD series launched in 2006, more than 10 million tickets have been sold to opera lovers worldwide and the series now screens on over 2000 screens in six countries worldwide.

Approximate run time for Otello: 181 minutes, including one intermission
