It has been 1 year since Wellington's jam night, The Session, began life at the Matterhorn and this Wednesday 7th of November The Session will be celebrating its 1st Birthday and a whole year of live improvised based music with special guest, multi-instrumental master, Adam Page.
Last November The Session was born out of a desire to create a much needed and accessible platform for Wellington musicians to come together and jam to develop their musicianship and create connections.
“The jam session is an important tradition in Jazz music as improvisation is a major defining feature of the genre, but the skills that are developed through improvisation are also extremely relevant to anyone who plays music. The musicians that I most admire all come out of cities that offer late night jam sessions, the most famous of all being New York where it is not uncommon to find some of the biggest names you can think of participating.” says Wellington's Session co-founder and host, Myele Manzanza.
“Over the last year we have had a whole range of guests come through on a Wednesday night, and each night has been a unique and fresh experience. Highlights for me have been amazing impromptu jams with musicians like Lupe Fiasco and Snoop Dogg's bassist Robert Lewis, or having Grammy award winner Poncho Sanchez's band sit in for a latin jazz take over. Not to mention the strong musical bonds formed between the house players Dan Hayles and Scott Maynard and myself. Most of all, I'm really proud of the way the local community has embraced the night and more importantly participated. It is a thrill to see so many people sitting in with musicians they have never met or played with before and I am especially thankful to our amazing host venue, Matterhorn, which has been the perfect home for us.” adds Manzanza.
Continuing on from the 'Local Legends' series where a local musician with exceptional skill and experience was featured as a guest musician, Adam Page has been invited to join the house band of Myele Manzanza (Drums), Scott Maynard (Bass) and Dan Hayles (Keys) for the birthday celebrations this Wednesday.
Hailing from Adelaide, Page moved to Wellington this year and has quickly become a local hero particularly known for his multi-instrumental looping show which he has performed all over the world and which has earned him the awards for “BEST MUSIC BY AN EMERGING ARTIST” at the 2007 Adelaide Fringe Festival and “BEST MUSIC” and “BEST SOLO SHOW” at the 2009 NEW ZEALAND Fringe festival.
Primarily a Saxophone player, the instruments Page performs with are as diverse as Bass, Keys,Percussion, Vocals, Tuvan Throat Singing, Beat Boxing, Guitar, Banjo, Flute, Clarinet, Kalimba (African Thumb Piano), Didgeridoo and Nose Flute in styles ranging from Funk, Tango and Punjabi to Classical, Jazz and Afrobeat.
“Adam is a highly creative and entertaining musician and entertainer and we are looking forward to a fun 1st Birthday party this Wednesday night." says Manzanza.
