Yachting Gold Medallists Take Top Honours

Yachting Gold Medallists Take Top Honours At Auckland Sports Awards

Olympic yachting 470 gold medallists Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie have added another honour to their already impressive year after being named the supreme winners at the Sport Auckland Sporting Excellence awards held at Alexandra Park last night.

The pair won the team of the year category and then the overall award in a ceremony which featured a wide range of sporting achievers in a variety of sports.

Aleh and Powrie had exceptional results around the world in the build-up to the London Olympics where they sailed a tactical race to take gold.

“It was tough for the judges to decide in all categories as there were some very worthy winners and some fantastic results. For Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie to win gold is a remarkable achievement and I’m sure everyone in New Zealand is proud of what they did in London. Congratulations to them and all finalists,” said Sport Auckland Chief Executive Daniel Gerrard.

All Black Keven Mealamu won the sportsman category from Olympic rowing bronze medallist Peter Taylor who had combined with Storm Uru in the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls to finish third in London and cycling bronze medallist, Aaron Gate from the London Team Pursuit race.

The women’s category had netball’s Anna Harrison from the Mystics and Silver Ferns winning ahead of team mate Maria Tutaia and softball’s, Kingsley Avery.

Ramon Tribulietx from football Auckland City FC was the coach of the year while Mt Albert Ramblers Softball Club took away the club award.
