New Zealand win shearing test
New Zealand shearers John Kirkpatrick and Nathan Stratford have sealed a series victory against Wales by winning the second Elders Primary Wool Shearing Series test in Balclutha, South Orago.
Shearing during the 53rd Otago Shearing and Woolhandling Championships on Saturday, Kirkpatrick, from Napier, and Stratford, from Invercargill, beat Welsh shearers Richard Jones and Gareth Lloyd Evans, both from Denbeighshire, by almost 16pts.
Last month, Kirkpatrick and fellow Hawke’s Bay shearer Rowland Smith won the first test at the Rotorua A and P Show, and Kirkpatrick and Stratford will contest the final test at the Pahiatua Shears on February 24.
Touring the UK last winter, Kirkpatrick and Stratford drew a four-test series against Wales.
Jones, the reigning Welsh circuit champion, and Evans, who won the Champion Shearer of Wales title at last year’s Royal Welsh Show, have their penultimate tour match against an invitation team at the Southern Shears in Gore this week.
They’ve won one match on tour, beating a Top of the South team at Reefton.
