Kapiti Playhouse - Brilliant Lies by David Williamson

“Brilliant Lies” is a black comedy based on sexual harassment at work. It is set in Australia soon after the introduction of their Anti-discrimination Board, against a background of a male backlash against feminism. This play should provoke controversy, bringing up the complex and confusing issues surrounding an allegation of sexual harassment with a comedic slant on a thought provoking matter. It also looks at the question of truth and the clash between different perceptions of truth and the eternal battle of the sexes. The conflicts existing then, still exist today. “Brilliant Lies” has it all - betrayal, hatred, love, sex and the complexities of human relationships.
The author David Williamson, considered Australia’s best playwright, has won numerous awards and has several of his plays adapted for the screen including “Brilliant Lies”. He is a master of meaningful, punchy, and funny dialogue, and not one word is superfluous. The play develops with sharp interchanges, change of focus, and unexpected turns.
Director Gennie Barton is very experienced in the theatre. She has also found an experienced cast and production team who are all committed to creating a challenging and entertaining evening of theatre. This production should provide a provoking, fun and most interesting evening.
