Taupo Sculpture Trust Launches New School Based Initiative

The Taupo Sculpture Trust is breaking new ground with the launch this month of a school based competition aimed at encouraging senior art students to try their hand at sculpture.

Taupo Nui-a-Tia College and Tongariro School in Turangi have signed up to the competition which involves senior students creating either a full set of sculpture drawings to scale or a small scale replica (marquette). The work done by each student will also count towards their NCEA qualifications.

Kaikoura sculptor Ben Foster – who created the two sculptures in Taupo’s Suncourt Plaza – will act as mentor to the students.

The entries will be judged by a panel of four. An overall winner will be selected from the winners and runners up from each school.

Trust chairman Claire Anderson says the project has attracted generous support - with Tuaropaki Trust coming on board as a major sponsor.

“Until now we have concentrated efforts on taking sculpture to the wider public by commissioning works for public areas,” says Mrs Anderson.

“We see the new project as means of encouraging our young artists, exposing them to new concepts and promoting their work in the community.”

The sculpture competition is being launched on Tuesday April 16 with motivational workshops for participating students at each of the schools. Ben Foster will be travelling to Taupo from Kaikoura for the launch.

The winners will be announced at a prize giving function at the Taupo museum on September 18. All of the designs submitted for the competition will be on display at the museum until September 27.
