Mamawish - Mayor to Launch Mother’s Day Celebration
Mamawish - Mayor to Launch Mother’s Day Celebration with a Difference
Wellington’s Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will join with mums across Wellington this weekend to celebrate the launch of ‘Mamawish’ and make her wish for mothers in 2013.
Bunting will be flying on Saturday 11th May as women gather at The Southern Cross Bar. Mums will meet to chat, enjoy nibbles and celebrate mothers by making their own wishes on pieces of bunting. Every mum who attends will get a free piece of jewellery donated by Smash Palace Jewellery.
‘Mamawish’ is a new web-based fundraising initiative that encourages people to make a wish for mothers. Many ‘mamawishes’ have been made online already via http://www.mamawish.org.nz/. It is possible to sponsor a wish with all proceeds going to support Wellington services for mothers. This year it’s Mothers Network Wellington, Post and Antenatal Distress Wellington and Birth Wise.
Marg McLachlan, Chairperson of Mothers Network, hails the project as a positive venture that has grown out of the challenging economic environment for not-for-profits. “Instead of buying mum a card for this ‘Hallmark holiday’; people can make a real difference to mothers by sponsoring a wish. In these times, it’s great to feel that the dollars you are spending are really doing some good as well as expressing your thanks to your mum!”
The event is happening at The Southern Cross Garden Bar and Restaurant this Saturday at 3pm. Melanie Neeley, Administrative Co-ordinator for Mothers Network says, “In years to come we hope that when people see bunting flying they will think of mothers and all that they contribute to society. Our group is celebrating 30 years this year – we want to survive and thrive for a new generation of mothers.”
