Taking the Stage for the Cuban Five
Auckland poets, writers, musicians and a dancer are performing on Saturday June 15th at the Maritime Club to support the worldwide effort to free the Cuban Five.
The Cuban Five were arrested in Florida almost 15 years ago and given draconian sentences for their efforts to monitor right-wing Cuban exile groups intent on sowing terror inside Cuba. Four of the Five are still in U.S. prisons. One has returned to Cuba. An international effort to free the Five has gained support from many prominent people and organisations.
The Cuban ambassador, Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, will open the show which features
• musicians Linn Lorkin and Hershal with flautist Trudy Lile & Marcello and his band ‘Cuban Accent’
• dancer Tupua Tigafua of the NZ Dance Company
• poets Riemke Ensing, Janet Charman, Bob Orr and Vivienne Plumb
• writers and readers David Lyndon Brown, Peter Beyer and Phillip C. Gordon
The show kicks off at 7pm with a Cuban supper, for $8, at the Maritime Club, 68 Anzac Ave, in the city.
