Popular mid-winter markets back at Remarkables Park

Remarkables Market’s red barn doors will re-open this week for its much-anticipated American Express Queenstown Winter Festival mid-winter markets, with a number of new stalls in the line-up.

Hugely popular throughout summer for its artisan products and seasonal produce, this year’s winter markets will offer locals and visitors delicious winter fare as well as festival entertainment for the whole family on Saturday June 22 and June 29 from 10am to 3pm.

Market Manager Sherryn Smith said she was “delighted” to welcome back the regular 40 or so summer stallholders as well as a few ‘newbies’.

“We’re very excited about the return of these special mid-winter markets, especially because of the range of newcomers and the warmer winter fare on offer,” she said.

“Marketgoers will get a real feast for all the senses, and many goodies they’ll no doubt want to take home.”

Delighting the palette are out-of-towners Wanaka-based The People’s Bread, bakers of organic sourdough bread, and Dunedin’s Quick Brown Fox which produces a decadent organic coffee liqueur with a hint of cinnamon. Other newcomers include Queenstown’s very own Posh Porridge with their delicious menu of porridge ingredients such as sticky date and cinnamon apple, vanilla baked pears, and almond and pistachio crumble, and new artisan Chris Hines who crafts jewellery out of silver forks, knives and spoons.

Mrs Smith said there would be an added touch of winter warmth to this year’s mid-winter markets.

“Market stalwart Bonjour Café will be serving mulled wine, while Queenstown Primary School year eight students will be raising funds by selling hot pumpkin soup and cheese rolls,” she said.

As well as fresh freshly-baked homemade treats and hot drinks, stallholder ’favourites’ returning for the mid-winter events include producers, makers and sellers of tea, organic cupcakes, cheese, honey, seafood, lamb, beef and salamis, candles, jewellery, clothing, possum and merino products, artwork, and sofa throws, as well as organic and eco baby toys, clothing and products.

Adding to the ambience during the first market will be ‘Wonky Donkey’ singer/songwriter Craig Smith, and ‘singing fireman’ Lyall McGregor. There will also be free face painting from 11am to 3pm and a bouncy castle to entertain the young ones while parents browse their favourite stalls and enjoy the unique atmosphere of Remarkables Market.
