Steam Press authors win big at the Sir Julius Vogel Awards
New Zealand’s annual science fiction and fantasy awards were held in Wellington last night, and authors from local publisher Steam Press walked away with a haul of Sir Julius Vogel Awards.
Fredrik Brounéus won the award for best youth novel with his book The Prince of Soul and The Lighthouse, while Matt and Debbie Cowens won for best collected work with Mansfield with Monsters. Matt and Debbie also won a Vogel for best new talent.
“Matt, Debbie, and Fredrik were up against some really tough competition – books by established, really well known authors that were released by big international publishers,” says Stephen Minchin, the publisher at Steam Press. “It’s brilliant to see their hard work rewarded, and fantastic to know that readers have enjoyed the books they’ve written. It’s also bloody great to see that smaller publishers can hold their own.”
Both The Prince of Soul and The Lighthouse and Mansfield with Monsters have received glowing reviews and required multiple print runs here in New Zealand, and The Prince of Soul has just been released in the Czech Republic, and will be out in Germany soon. Both of these books, as well as others from Steam Press including Joseph Edward Ryan’s recently released The Factory World, are available from all good booksellers.
