explicit:implicit is a challenging, three day R18 exhibition, opening this Friday evening as part of “The Porn Project” fringe art festival.
Encompassing the work of over twenty performance and visual artist, the show seeks to explore sexuality and gender in relation to porn. explicit:implicit positions itself as neither pro nor anti pornography. Instead, we wish to provoke discussion, consider possibilities, celebrate diversities, and provide encounters which challenge and engage.
Open for just one weekend, several different events will be held in this pop-up space.
An exhibition by local and international artists runs 5:30-9pm Friday, and midday – 5pm Saturday Sunday.
Friday night and Saturday also see an installation of The Lady Garden by guest Wellington artist Virginia Kennard. For this work, Kennard ‘installs’ naked women in a variety of domestic settings, challenging her audience to both objectify and desexualise the performers simultaneously.
On Saturday evening, explicit:implicit hosts “Exhibitionists”, a live performance art evening beginning at 7:30pm, featuring local artists and international guests. With a varied line-up, artists tackle themes provoked by pornography, including heteronormativity, gendered performance, hyper-masculinity, exoticism, femininity and the gaze. A mixture of parody and serious performances, Exhibitionists will create an atmosphere which is both playful and provocative, hard and soft, an illustration that gender and sexuality are anything but black and white!
On Sunday at 2pm a panel discussion, Explicit Details, will engage with the shows, “The Porn Project” and wider equality discourses.
The explicit:implicit exhibition and performance space opens this Friday, 5:30pm in Suite 108, 150 K’rd, behind Hardluck café.
