NZ Wins Bid to Host 2015 WGKF World Karate Championship
Press Release
At the world congress during the WGKF World Karate Championships 12th September 2013, New Zealand was successful in winning the hosting rights for the next World Goju Ryu Karate Championships in 2015. Leading the bid from New Zealand was Dennis May , Oceania Goju Ryu Karate Federation, President and Auckland's Sylvia McClunie who put in a excellent presentation helped with the support of ATEED (Auckland tourism events & economic development).
Four countries bided to host the 2015 World Championships . New Zealand , India, Brazil, Germany.
May reported .. it was not easy to win .. at last years European Championships Germany persuaded all the European countries to support their bid at this congress. New Zealand's bid was centred around how great New Zealand is to visit and that we have hosted world class Karate events such as the highly successful Asia-Pacific Karate Championships in Auckland 1991 & Commonwealth Championships in Wellington. With May and McClunie doing a great presentation and the support of WGKF World President from Portugal , Humberto De Oliveira the vote was going to be tight , during the congress Italy then a group of Eastern European countries swung their support for New Zealand, Dennis May then got support from the Asian and Pan-American countries , then when the voting took place New Zealand won with a very strong margin.
This will be a huge boost to Karate here in New Zealand and the Oceania Region, with over 60 countries invited, 1000 competitors & Officials , we expect this to be one of the largest ever WGKF World Championships.
