Premiere of "Hunting and Gathering" coming to Wellington!

24 September 2013

International Premiere of "Hunting and Gathering" coming to Wellington!

Backyard Theatre proudly presents the international premiere of Hunting and Gathering by Brooke Berman at the Gryphon Theatre in October.

Hunting and Gathering is one of New York Magazine’s Top 10 Plays of 2008, and this critically-acclaimed comedy will make its New Zealand debut from 2 October at the Gryphon Theatre in Wellington. Described as When Harry Met Sally for hipsters, this play is a light-hearted look at real estate woes and the "quarter-life crisis".

Ruth is gathering ex-boyfriends and old flats at an alarming rate. Jesse, her latest ex, just bought his first place - alone. Bess wants a man and a flat, preferably as a package deal, and Astor wants to keep couch-surfing until "the right one" comes along. But who will wind up with who, and where will they all live? Hunting and Gathering is a witty romantic comedy for anyone who's ever surfed the TradeMe flat ads and wondered, "Is this it?"

The show has special resonance for many cast members, including Libby Wilson, who plays Bess. She tells her flatting nightmare story: “Hollywood definitely gave me the wrong idea about flatmates! After a year of moving into a flat we got a new flatmate. Let’s call him Bruce.

“At the flat we had a rule: if you are throwing a party everybody has to get at least 4 days’ notice. Bruce, like many other things, clearly thought this didn’t apply to him and a party with his wasted, trashy friends ended up lasting for five straight days. Thankfully, I live alone now!”

Harriet Prebble, who plays Ruth, says the events in the play remind her of trying to find housing in Christchurch after the earthquake. “A flat I was looking at disappeared off TradeMe at $345 a week and appeared back at $750 a week, because the listers knew people were so desperate for houses they’d pay anything. I wound up living in an NZ Post holiday home for a month.”

Hunting and Gathering runs from 2 to 12 October at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee St, Wellington. Tickets are $25 waged, $20 unwaged/concession, and $18 Equity/NZAG.
