International links forged
through Parliamentary sport in Argentina
Sporting and inter-Parliamentary links will be enhanced when the Parliament Rugby Team accepts a long standing invitation to play the Argentinian Congreso XV in Buenos Aires say co-captains Damien O’Connor and Cam Calder.
“After hosting a number of international Parliamentary teams for the 2011 Parliamentary Rugby World Cup, the Congreso XV invited us to visit Argentina in 2012 but Parliamentary commitments prevented this from happening,” says O’Connor.
“When the invitation was extended again this year through Argentinian Ambassador Fernando Escalona we were delighted to find a suitable gap in the Parliamentary calendar,” says Calder.
The Parliament Rugby Team will play a rematch of their 2011 game against the Congreso XV before being hosted by the Argentinian Parliament for a number of official visits and meetings, including with the Vice President of Argentina Amado Boudou.
“The 2011 Parliamentary World Cup was a great success and showed us how sport can be used to develop inter-Parliamentary connections,” says O’Connor.
The MPs visiting Argentina are Damien O’Connor, Cam Calder, Winston Peters, Alfred Ngaro and Mark Mitchell.
“We are looking forward to meeting old frends and further broadening and deepening the relationship between our two countries,” says Calder.
