Leading Auckland Community Orchestra Teams With Dominic Bowden To Recognise Music Teachers

Leading Auckland community orchestra Aotea Youth Symphony is partnering with XFactor host Dominic Bowden in launching a competition to recognise Auckland’s undervalued music teachers.

Aucklanders can vote for their favourite private or school music teacher in the inaugural Noteworthy Music Teacher competition now until the 3rd of October. Dominic Bowden is presenting the prize for the winning teacher on the 9th of October.

Bowden, a former Aotea Youth Symphony member, says he has the fondest memories of his time spent in his school’s music department.

“Music was the one thing I was good at and really loved at school; my music teachers recognised this and helped me develop my talent. To be a part of something that gives back to all the awesome music teachers in Auckland is very rewarding.”

Bowden participated in the jazz band, the choir and the orchestra while at school.

Paul Harrop, the Symphony’s Music Director, recognises the crucial role that music teachers play in the personal development of their students.

“Aotea Youth Symphony owes a lot to Auckland’s music teachers they are the backbone of our musical community.”

Bowden will be announcing the top voted music teacher at a special Aotea Youth Symphony concert on the 9th of October in Auckland. The teacher will receive prizes valued at over $1000 sponsored by KBB Music and the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust.

Voting can be done through the Symphony’s website, www.aotea.org.nz.

Aotea Youth Symphony was formed in 1986 and has been conducted by Harrop since its inception. It currently has about 65 members from the ages of 12 to early 20s and plays several times a year around Auckland as well as around the country and overseas.
