Emirates update: challenger of record for 35th America's Cup
Emirates Team New Zealand update - challenger of record for the 35th America's Cup
October 1 2013
Emirates Team New Zealand today welcomed the return of Australia to the America’s Cup. The Golden Gate Yacht club announced that it had accepted a challenge for the 35th America’s Cup from Queensland’s Hamilton Island Yacht Club.
Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker said it was great to have Australia back in the Cup. “It is 30 years since the Royal Perth Yacht Club won the Cup from the United States at Newport. Australia defended unsuccessfully in 1987 and was a challenger in 2000.”
He said of greater concern to Emirates Team New Zealand was the venue, timing and class of yacht to be raced which have still to be announced.
“The dates, type of boat, format and rules will be negotiated by the HIYC as challenger of record and the GGYC as defender. The defender alone decides the venue.
“Both challenger and defender have said they want multiple challengers and to cut campaign costs for teams. We would welcome that,” Barker said.
GGYC and HIYC expect to have a protocol including dates, venue, boats and other details, agreed and published in the first few months of next year.
