Young Kiwi Ninth At New Gold Coast Kart Event
Reigning New Zealand Cadet class champion Callum Hedge from the Bay of Plenty had a good day at the inaugural Coates Hire Race of Stars kart meeting at Pimpama on Australia's Gold Coast on Saturday, finishing third in his second Cadet class heat and ninth in the Final.
The 10-year-old from Tauranga was one of two New Zealand karters to cross the Tasman for the meeting, with Wanganui 18-year-old Aaron Marr contesting the KF Senior class.
Marr, however, had a weekend to forget, qualifying eighth quickest only to be shunted off the track in the first heat and lucky to be able to work his way back up to 10th place then slowed by a spark plug problem in the second heat before being stopped completely by an electrical fault in the Final.
The new event, part of the build-up to this year's Armor-All Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercar race and held at a purpose-built 1200 metre kart track at an upmarket outdoor hire kart facility, attracted a capacity entry of 150 karters and a large crowd of spectators.
The premier KZ2 class was dominated by nationally-ranked local driver Christopher Hayes from Joey Hansen and Kel Treseder.
