Burkes Cycles Round 2: Uivel, Johnson Surge Into the Lead

Burkes Cycles Round 2: Uivel, Johnson Surge Into the Lead

Max Uivel and Ione Johnson were the big winners at round two of the Burkes Cycles Speed League at Wellington Velodrome in Hataitai on Sunday November 10. Uivel snapped up three out of the four races on offer in the B category and nabbed a second place in the Team Scratch. A relative rookie to racing, Uivel's powerful sprint helped him to clean wins in the Scratch, Points Grabber and Sprinters' Scratch.

Uivel holds a four point lead in the overall competition over Zac Blakely, however he is likely be promoted to the A category for next week's round three which may slow down his point-scoring rate. Also riding in the B category was under 17 league leader Will Findlay who pushed Uivel for second in the Sprinters Scratch and picked up third places in the Scratch and Team Scratch.

Under 19 BikeNZ development squad rider Ione Johnson shot to the top of the women's leader board with four wins including the 15-lap handicap scratch and Points Grabber. She now leads the women's competition by 11 points over Ele Pepperell with Renita Vanderhelm one point further back.

A high quality field of twelve riders took the start in the A category races. Louis Higgison notched up his first win of the season with victory in the 10-lap Scratch, as did Conor Johnson in the 6-lap Points Grabber. Zac Blakely took the Sprinters' Scratch, before going on to help his Meo GP team mate Ben Humphries to an excellent win in the Team Scratch.
