High School Students Bling Bras for Breast Cancer

High School Students Bling Bras for Breast Cancer

Wellington, November 20, 2013 - Next week's Bling My Bra Gala and Competition will feature a large number of entries from local high schools.

Bling My Bra is a creative bra competition where entrants are invited to decorate a bra to a theme of their choice. The entries are displayed in an exhibition at the fundraising gala.

"The people who enter the competition are sewers and crafters, they are not professional designers but rather creative people who have been inspired to bling a bra" says Bling My Bra Director Jenny Deonarain. "It's a unique chance for them to have their work displayed in an exhibition".

"Some of the local high schools have assigned the competition as a project in their fashion technology classes with wonderful results". Both of last year's winners were Year 10 students from Wellington Girls' College. Hutt Valley High School alone has entered 30 bras this year, with more entries expected from the other schools.

Pitched at a community level, the competition is more accessible to entrants than WOW. "WOW is a wonderful event but submitting an entry can be an intimidating and expensive process. Bling My Bra is a great way for budding designers to test the waters of the wearable art process".

This year's Gala will be in the Old Museum Building, Buckle Street from 6pm on Thursday 28 November.

The entertainment includes a fashion show of WOW Bizarre Bra entries from previous years and a performance by female vocal trio Avidiva.

Tickets can be purchased at www.blingmybra.org.nz
