New Zealand Youth Games
New Zealand Youth Games
5-8 December 2013
Games Village – Claudelands Arena
Sporting Venues - In and around Hamilton City
The New Zealand Youth Games is the largest sporting event in New Zealand for athletes under 19 years of age. It is a unique competition for youth with an Olympic-like atmosphere. In 2013, 16 sports are taking part over four days with around 2,000 elite athletes participating from schools across the country.
Built on the enthusiasm generated by the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the event has taken place every four years since. However, this year, they are occurring five years after the last event in order to align with the Youth Olympic Games, to be held in China in 2014.
The NZ Youth Games are proudly based on the ideals and values of the Olympic Games. Alongside intense competition at the highest level which tests physical and mental strength, a strong focus is on bringing together young people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, to embrace the spirit of the Olympic Values: friendship, unity and honour.
This is an opportunity for young, elite athletes to experience a high calibre sporting event. It allows them to gain an insight into what will happen if they go on to represent New Zealand at the international level, at the Commonwealth and/or Olympic Games.
The New Zealand Youth Games is proudly brought to you in association with the University of Waikato and Hamilton City Council.
