Some of Highwic’s special Christmas guests.
Highwic will be hosting some extra special guests again this Christmas.
As part of Highwic’s annual festive make-over, a group of rare, antique bisque (unglazed porcelain) dolls will take pride of place in the Ballroom of the Newmarket mansion, which is cared for by the NZ Historic Places Trust.
The dolls are part of a 200-strong collection owned by Karen Sorenson, and depict a Victorian classroom with all grades in one room overseen by a teacher wearing clothing appropriate for the era, as well as accessories, props and even several vintage dogs.
“The doll display featuring some of Karen’s dolls is a regular feature of Highwic’s Christmas decorations, and we’re delighted that we’re able to provide a heritage venue where Karen is able to share these century-old toys with people,” says the Manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie.
“People of all ages look forward to the display every year.”
The doll display is on at Highwic until Christmas.
Highwic is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Admission $10 per adult; children and NZHPT members free.
