Student Fines go to Worthy Cause

Fines totalling more than $3000 have been donated to Surf Lifesaving NZ in an initiative led by global tertiary accommodation provider Campus Living Villages Limited.

Fines from students have been a welcome contribution according to Matt Warren - Grants, Fundraising and Projects Manager at Surf Lifesaving NZ. “We greatly appreciate the generous donation from Campus Living Villages” he says.

Students living at Canterbury University’s UCA Halls of residence (which is owned and managed by Campus Living Villages) were fined due to rule breaches whist living on campus this year. Some of these included disorderly behaviour, noise and or breaching general community wellbeing guidelines.

“Fines are treated as a learning lesson, showing consequences for actions. We pride ourselves on giving all fines of these nature to a charity selected by the residents (of that year)”. Says Nik Webb-Shephard, Chief Operating Officer at Campus Living Villages.

The contribution will go towards developing resources and programmes that up-skill our lifeguard volunteers” says Matt. “These lifeguards are ordinary kiwis that put their lives on the line every weekend to keep others safe."

“The contribution to Surf Lifesaving is fitting” says Campus Living Villages COO Nik Webb-Shephard. “Many of our students return home for summer and spend lots of time at the beach. It’s a place many young people gravitate to which is why we felt this donation was appropriate”.
