IMNZ welcomes new labels

IMNZ would like to welcome four new members: Self Sown, 8 Foot Sativa Records, Revaulting Records, and Statik West. This week we feature Self Sown and 8 Foot Sativa; in coming weeks we'll profile our other new members.

Self Sown Records
Hailing from teeny Invercargill, Alt. Folk, Singer/Songwriters Graeme Wollerand Liv McBride - aka Into the East - are fast becoming iconic, or at least their “stage” is anyway – they’re unsure if people come for the music or just to take photos of a vintage living room perched on the Steamer Wharf in Queenstown. The music is timeless. It’s like being wrapped in Nanna’s crocheted blankets in front of a fire on a frosty evening (how’s that for a line). Sets are laced with dulcet vocals, Simon & Garfunkel styled harmonies, lightly dusted with quirky percussion and set against a hand painted backdrop of enchanting guitars. Their album ‘Fight From The Inside’ is entirely self-produced and recorded in unique locations from late nights in a local radio station, afternoons in a city park and even early mornings in Liv’s wardrobe. It certainly makes for great work stories (just don’t mention crop spraying...). As a result Into The East’s sound is full of rich tones, warmth and comfort that can only come from doing things backwards whilst moving forwards. 8 Foot Sativa Records
Formed in 1998, 8 Foot Sativa rose from the Wild West of Auckland to become one of New Zealand's premiere metal bands. They’ve shared the stage with many profile bands including Metallica, Pantera, Soulfly, Korn, Slipknot, System of a Down, Children of Bodom, Disturbed, Amon Amarth, Motorheadand Corrosion of Conformity. In 2002 the band’s debut album 'Hate Made Me' achieved Gold status in New Zealand. 2003's 'Season For Assault; garnered five star reviews, entered the album charts at number 6, and made it to number 1 on the independent charts, a first for a Metal band in New Zealand. In 2005 8 Foot released their third album, 'Breed The Pain', recorded in Sweden with Studio Underground's Pelle Saether (Carnal Forge, Fleshcrawl). The band so enjoyed the dynamic with the veteran producer/engineer that he was brought on board for album number four 'Poison of Ages'. 2012 saw the band releasing a best-of compilation, and in 2013 they released their 5th album 'The Shadow Masters’. In the immediate future, they’re playing Westfest, plus Orientation, with Australian shows coming soon.

Estere to support Eykah Badu
Robin Fernando and Fu Zen Entertainment confirm that electro soul singer Estère will open for Erykah Badu this April at Auckland’s Civic Theatre. The talented Wellingtonian has wowed audiences around the country, with comparisons likened to Erykah Badu andKimbra. Aside from her solo music, Estère has opened for the likes of Sola Rosa and Flume on the local live music circuit and more recently, travelled to Melbourne, Paris, London and Seoul. Two songs that she recorded in her bedroom (Cruel Charlie and Culture Clash) have received extensive radio play on stations throughout New Zealand and have featured on various international blogs including Disco Naivetè and Portals. The end of 2013 saw Estère became the latest recipient of the Red Bull Prodigy Project, which involved work in the Red Bull Studios in Auckland, being mentored by Washington D.C. bred MC, rapper and producer Oddisee. The result of this collaboration was the release of three songs, ‘Flash Light,’ ‘Curtains Down’ and ‘Noon.’ Estère has been chosen to perform at Splore Festival, this weekend in Tapakanga National Park.

The reptilian swing
One half of Auckland duo The Bemsha Swing(MUZAI), Shane Warbrooke, has sought Official Information for “any evidence to disprove the theory that Mr John Key is in fact a David Ickestyle reptilian alien ushering humanity towards enslavement”. Today he recieved a response from the Prime Minister’s Office that “no official information specific to your request has been identified…”

New release fanfare

Medtiate on this
New Zealander Jeffree Clarkson's blissful meditative music can touch the heart in a powerful way. Being present in the healing sounds of his beautiful music creates a profound experience of inner peace and connection, at deep and personal level. Since 1985 when Jeffree released his first album "Butterfly", his music has been a favorite for meditators and healers worldwide. Ode Records has just released his newest offering, ‘One in the Field’.

International classics
The four skilled musicians of the Puertas Quartet carry a wealth of experience between them and a common musical heritage unites the the group. Having met whilst studying and working in London, the quartet was formed in 2009. The two married couples met in London, but now live almost 12,000 miles apart. Despite this, their passion and love for chamber music always brings them back together for instense periods of musicmaking; their latest meeting has resulted in this, their latest album, ‘Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov’.

Queen of the Banjo
'Country Banjo', the third album by New Zealand's "Queen of the Banjo", Jenny Blackadder, has a selection of Old Time Country Music classics and two originals. Jenny wrote "Cotton Pickin Jenny" in 2007 to celebrate her induction into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, and "Prairie Banjo" was written by Bob Heinz (guitarist) especially for Jenny's unique Banjo playing style.

Neil Finn, videomaker
Neil Finn has released a new video for the title track for his album 'Dizzy Heights', which was released on February 7 through Lester Records via Kobalt Label Services (KLS) (and Rhythmethod in New Zealand). The video showcases Finn’s creative skills as he is credited as Co-Director on the clip after directing the video for lead track ‘Divebomber’ last year. Finn said of the clip, “I made this video to accompany the song Dizzy Heights as a depiction of the secret worlds we invent when searching for inspiration...an endless variety of scenes that play out every night behind windows all over town as people shut themselves away to make their own beauty. Thanks to Sonya Whiteman for getting me started and putting a glass bowl on my head.”
You can view the clip here . Finn recently recorded a MAX Session to broadcast across Australia on March 24. Accompanied by a new band, the set list included songs from Crowded House and Split Enz alongside his recent solo work. Finn welcomed Eddie Vedder to join him for the encore which ended with an unforgettable performance of ‘History Never Repeats’.
