Country’s Coming to Town

New Zealand’s largest community event is almost here. Organisers are expecting 100,000 people to attend the Canterbury A&P Show in Christchurch from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 November.

Animals have been the backbone of the Canterbury A&P Show since its inception in 1863, and Canterbury Agricultural Park will house thousands of them for three days – country really does come to town.

Event Director Geoff Bone said that livestock, equestrian and feature competition entry numbers are up this year.

“With shearing and woodchopping entries still coming in, 2014 entries are going to far exceed 2013’s entries. This means that we will see some of the highest entry levels in the Show’s history.”

“It’s fantastic to see a significant increase in equestrian entries from 2013, in fact equestrian entry numbers are second only to the Royal Show held in 2009. The entry increase is thanks to the introduction of two new sections, European Native Breeds and Golden Horse, and strong entry numbers from our younger competitors and their ponies.”

“Sheep and wool and fibre entries are also up on 2013, an encouraging sign for the sheep industry, and we’ve received the most Boer Goat entries ever.”

The Canterbury A&P Show is the largest agricultural and pastoral show in New Zealand with over 1700 showing classes held throughout the three days of the Show. In addition to showing success, exhibitors and competitors will be vying for over $100,000 in prize money, 4000 prize ribbons and 250 trophies.
