Mal Law showed at the weekend that when preparing for an extreme running event normal training regimes go out the window.

Last weekend as part of his preparation for the Partners Life High Five-0 Challenge (50 peaks in 50 days) Mal ran, walked and crawled up and down Mt Iron in Wanaka for 24 hours. During the process he covered the distance of 2.5 marathons, climbed 7011 vertical metres and descended the same – the equivalent going up and down Sky Tower 37 times.

An exhausted but happy Mal said after the event it was probably tougher than he expected but it was the type of preparation he needs to undertake before he starts the Partners Life High Five-0 Challenge in February 2015.

“The Partners Life High Five-0 Challenge is not going to be just about the physical challenge it also has a lot to do with the mental aspect of it and the run at weekend certainly gave me a taste of what I will be facing on a daily basis next year. The pleasing thing was that I completed it and that gives me a big psychological boost ahead of next year’s event. “

The Partners Life High Five-0 Challenge is raising money to support mental health. Mal’s target is to raise $250,000 for the Mental Health Foundation, people can support Mal by going to his website www.high50.org.nz/
