Craft beer calendar shows woman-friendly side to industry
The beer industry has not traditionally been a friend to women, but the Craft Beer Calendar has shown the lengths people will go to to help end sexual violence.
In just 10 days, the project has raised more than $4000, meaning several thousand dollars will be donated to Wellington's Sexual Abuse Prevention Network.
"We're completely blown away," says organiser Jessica Ducey."In an industry which occasionally uses women as props in advertising, we've found the good sorts. The ones who recognise women as lovers, makers and consumers of beer; who see women as part of the community, not just as eye candy."
"Beer often gets a bad rap - sometimes deservedly so - but we wanted to show off the community we love," she says.
"Breweries like Garage Project, Panhead and Good George, bars like Pomeroy's, Hashigo Zake and The Lumsden, writers and punters have got together and raised thousands of dollars - and probably caused a global shortage of hearts-for-eyes emoji."
"As well as getting on board with sponsorship, beer people have offered their time, expertise, and to leave their dignity at the door when agreeing to be models."
"Sexual violence is a very real problem in New Zealand, so it's great that the community is actively working to help end it," Ducey says.
Organisers are scheduling photoshoots thick and fast, with themes as varied as Game of Thrones, Shakespeare, and superheroes. People can still pledge to buy a calendar, and bars and breweries can still sponsor the remaining months. (https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/2820-2015-craft-beer-calendar)
