Registrations Open for Disability Surf Day at Mt Maunganui
Registrations are now open for a surf day at Main Beach, Mount Maunganui on Saturday 13 December for physically disabled people hosted by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation as part of the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Programme.
The ‘Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Programme’ was launched in August 2014 as a partnership between disability sport charity the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and the charity arm of New Zealand’s leading travel retailer, Flight Centre. The programme will give physically disabled young New Zealanders the opportunity to experience the thrill of surfing at a series of beach events around the country this summer.
The Mount Maunganui surf day will give people with a physical disability the opportunity to have a go at surfing. The event will take place between 10.00 am – 2.00 pm and include an opportunity to have a go at surfing, beach games and activities and a sausage sizzle for participants and volunteers.
The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is working in partnership with Surfing New Zealand, Hibiscus Surf School, and Mount Boardriders, to deliver the day. Volunteers from those organisations, Flight Centre staff and local community members will all receive ‘No Exceptions Training (NET)’ from the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation. The training will give them the skills and confidence to support the participants at the event.
On the day the Flight Centre Foundation will also donate an adjustable beach wheelchair to the Hibiscus Surf School to ensure they can continue to offer support and events for physically disabled young Kiwis interested in surfing. This equipment will enable wheelchair users to be able to traverse beaches and roll straight into the water.
To register as a participant or volunteer for the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Day at Main Beach, (opposite Mt Drury, Grace Ave/Marine Parade) Mount Maunganui on Saturday 13 December contact Halberg Disability Sport Adviser Cherryl Thompson on cherryl@halberg.co.nz or 07 578 0016 by 11 December or go to www.halbergallsports.co.nz.
